Superannuation

Superannuation is a long term savings plan for retirement for Australian workers aged between 18 and 70.

Work super has been compulsory since 1992. Employers must pay contributions of 9% of salary into a super fund for their employees who earn at least $450 per month.

Your super salary usually includes bonuses, allowances and leave payments but not overtime or worker's compensation payments.

Contributions must be paid every three months.

Most super funds also include disability and death benefits. They are usually insurance benefits which 'top up' your superannuation to support you or your dependants.

Public servants may be members of generous defined benefits funds which includes disability pensions and lump sum death benefits.

If you have an injury or sickness you might have a claim - many people on WorkCover or Centrelink can claim.

Super funds must have rules to deal with claims and complaints. If your claim is rejected or if you are mucked around, you can complain to the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal or lodge a court case.

What is my super?
You should get a Benefit Statement from your super fund every year. The statement will say what your account balance is and the disability and death benefits you have. Sometimes they are hard to understand.

It is important to check that your employer is paying super contributions for you. Contributions should be recorded on your pay slips and you can contact your fund to check.

You will usually be able to choose what super fund your employer pays contributions to. Before choosing or changing funds, make sure you check the disability and death benefits that the fund offers and whether you can also keep any insurance cover you have with existing funds.

  • 14. Maurice Blackburn does not monitor your data or transmissions, yet, Maurice Blackburn does actively monitor accounts for system utilisation. Upon any breach of this agreement, or inappropriate use of Maurice Blackburn services as determined by Maurice Blackburn in its sole discretion, Maurice Blackburn reserves the right to terminate your registration. Maurice Blackburn's preferred course of action is to advise you of your inappropriate use or breach of this agreement and recommend any necessary corrective action.

The NPPs require us to take reasonable steps to protect the security of personal information. Maurice Blackburn personnel are required to respect the confidentiality of personal information and the privacy of individuals. Maurice Blackburn takes reasonable steps to protect personal information held from misuse and loss and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure, for example by use of physical security and restricted access to electronic records.
Where we no longer require your personal information for a permitted purpose under the NPPs, we will take reasonable steps to destroy it.

Can I access to my personal information?

Subject to the exceptions set out in the Privacy Act, you may gain access to the personal information which Maurice Blackburn holds about you by contacting our Privacy Officer.
We will require you to verify your identity and to specify what information you need.
